SACRAMENTAL LIFE:
--Part of our life together in a school is setting aside time to gather and pray. No one is an island, therefore we gather to celebrate what God has done and continues to do in us, with us, through us and to us. We also gather to petition God for those things we still need to make this world even better than we found it. We have Masses regularly at the school and Reconciliation is offered twice a year during the holy seasons of Advent and Lent.
**SPECIAL NOTE: Chaplaincy Leaders in the Halton Catholic School Board prepare a one day training for students who wish to become Extraordinary Ministers of Communion, Lectors and/or Altar Servers. It is a wonderful reflection of our community to see students minister to their peers in this way.
SOCIAL JUSTICE COUNCIL:
--This group of students gather weekly each Thursday to plan events and programs that nurture the social conscience of the school: from food drives to trips to seniors' homes to volunteering at food banks, these students learn first hand what it is to walk the talk.
RAIDERS OF LIFE:
-students and staff gather around events looking for ways to remind the STA community that life is holy from conception to natural death. There are many issues related to nurturing our holiness: a balance of campaigns, awareness initiatives, and guest speakers all help reach the goal of helping our students recognize their holiness and the holiness of all others and our creation.
PAC:
-a group of students meet every other week to raise awareness on the issues surrounding the LGBTQ+ community and how we can be more Christ-like to those on the margins. Every one is created in the image and likeness of God and God's justice and mercy knows no boundaries.
RETREATS:
--All Grade Nines are offered a retreat through their period one class in first semester. This day is meant to help them put their worries and stresses aside and just "be." Games and activities are played, lessons are shared, lunch is provided and prayer is infused throughout the day. Students return to the school with wonderful memories and feeling affirmed that they are part of God's grand vision for the world.
COMPASSIONATE PRESENCE:
--My door is always open for those who need a space for venting, sorting through emotions, or a place to relax and share a laugh or two. We can find ourselves in situations that can be overwhelming or that push us to our limits. Talking to someone we trust can help us sort out what we are feeling and the decisions we need to make to live healthy / healthier lives. There is much emphasis on mental health and positive coping strategies. The Chaplaincy department works with staff and the other care givers in the school to help support our students.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: RAIDERS THRIVE!
--together with students, parent reps and the Social Worker, we work on raising awareness to all in our community that mental health is more important than grades, a resume, a portfolio, status and reputation. Mental health is what can help or hinder any of these and any of these can help or hinder one's mental health. We work on raising awareness through campaigns, bring speakers to the school and other events that help us learn from others' experiences and see the shared wisdom from which we can all benefit.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS:
--Student leaders are needed for many programs and events that happen throughout the school year. Getting involved through Chaplaincy is a safe way to test out new skills, learn more skills and become aware of issues that make one a more enlightened individual. Our world seems to be changing rapidly and a new normal is quickly being realized. Adaptive, creative leaders are always needed and the skills learned here are transferable to any situation or career.
GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT:
--When we lose someone we love, it can make life that much harder. An integral part of Chaplaincy is helping others through their grief. This can be done through conversation, scripture/prayer, activities for the individual, and/or small groups. The one(s) grieving determine the pace, the content and the needs to be met.
BULLYING AWARENESS AND PREVENTION:
--Working with staff and students, campaigns and initiatives are taken to raise awareness of the harmful effects of bullying at the high school level and with younger students in our family of schools.
